It’s that time of the year where many are planning their holiday gift giving budgets. This year, why not make a list of causes you’d like to show your support for? Today is Veterans Day, the day we set aside time to say thank you to all those who served in the U.S. military past and present. And we at Support Store would like to take a moment and give a special thanks to all those who have made it part of their life’s work to protect our country and our freedom.
They are the oldest military branch in American history. They are the first to enter into a military situation and defend our country and its constitution along with being the President’s guards. They are held to the highest standards of ethics and morality, their name alone evoking respect, courage and commitment. After taking their oath, they enter a brotherhood that is a forever bond exemplified by the motto “Semper Fidelis” and their souls are said to guard the gates of heaven with St. Peter. They are the few, the proud, the Marines, and I am proud to be able to call one of them Dad and another Grandpa. And today, November 10, 2010, marks their 235th birthday.
Here’s a quick trivia question you can ask people today: How many animals are taken to shelters each year? Answer: The Humane Society of the US estimates that 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are cared for in shelters every year. Of these, 3 to 4 million are euthanized. Through November 13th, take the time to support your favorite animal shelter during National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
Epilepsy is a disease that more than 3 million Americans live with. It is estimated that an additional 200,000 new cases develop each year. I hope that everyone takes a few minutes this November to learn more about epilepsy, help dispel myths, and learn what to do should you encounter someone who is having a seizure.
It may be the organ taken most for granted, yet your body could not function without it. It’s your skin. This November, learn more about how to take better care of your body’s largest organ during Healthy Skin Month.
When many hear pancreatic cancer, they may think of the well known people who have had it, like Patrick Swayze and Randy Pausch. These gentlemen are just two of the thousands of people who have had pancreatic cancer in the past decade and, sadly, lost their battles. The American Cancer Society estimates that the lifetime risk of having pancreatic cancer is 1 in 72, which makes this a cause worth everyone’s attention.
For me, Thanksgiving day is scheduled with a lot of cooking, relaxing, and giving thanks. For others in my house, it’s about one of the greatest fall past times: FOOTBALL! So this Thanksgiving while some are dressing their turkeys, I suggest that you dress your car with your favorite football team colors.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and organizations across the country are working to spread the word on how to prevent this disease that affects millions across the country.
